The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) consists of a ceramic, porous core that traps particles down to 23 nm in diameter – about 5 times smaller than an influenza virus. It’s the most effective way to meet Euro VI limits to particulate emissions, and is so effective that the exhaust gas contains less particles than typical ambient air in populated and urban areas!

Eventually the filter will be full of trapped particles and soot. For this reason the surface is catalytically coated with Platinum Group Metals (PGM), which at the right conditions burn the trapped particles. This is called regeneration and helps to keep the back pressure low for up to 100s of thousand kilometers, before an actual cleaning is necessary.
Regular cleaning is not effective at removing hardened ash, which means for every regular cleaning, your service intervals are likely reducing.
